Banjarmasin – In order to strengthen the academic atmosphere within the Study Program (PS), PS Mathematics Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) held a series of Public Lecture activities which were carried out online through zoom conferences. The activities were held on March 13, 16, and 19, 2024 with different speakers and lecture materials. This activity was attended by active students and alumni of the PS Mathematics Education FKIP ULM.

The Public Lecture on March 13 explored the opportunities and challenges of becoming a Mathematics teacher in Elementary School (SD). The speaker at this lecture was Selfina Soraya, an alumnus of the Mathematics Education Study Program who has been an educator of migrant workers’ children in Sabah, Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Public Lecture on March 16 took the theme of the lecture, The Role of Mathematics Teachers in Supporting the Actuarial Industry. The speaker at this lecture was Rudi Hartono, valuation actuary of PT AIA Financial as well as an alumnus of PS Mathematics Education FKIP ULM class of 2019. The Public Lecture on March 19 was delivered by Vidya Paramita with material on entrepreneurship in the field of Mathematics. Viday is also an alumni and manager of the JS Education Center.

One of the speakers, Rudi, conveyed the ins and outs of actuarial to the participants. According to him, actuarial is a discipline that assesses financial risks in insurance and finance using mathematical and statistical methods. In general, actuaries work in insurance, banking, financial services, risk and data analysis. According to him, this field of work is potential and necessary in order to weigh the risk factors that may arise in financial and investment transactions. Currently, this profession is still not widely practiced and Mathematics educators need to help direct students who are interested in this field.

According to the Coordinator of the Mathematics Education Study Program, Noor Fajriah, the target of this public lecture is to inspire and motivate students and alumni about useful things that can equip them in the future. “Students get an overview after graduation directly from practitioners who also happen to be successful alumni,” she said.
