Bangkok – Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs, Atiek Winarti and Chair of the Independent Campus Learning Unit (MBKM), Jumariati on Tuesday-Wednesday, 21-22 March 2023 participated in the SEA Teacher Student Exchange Summit which was held at the Avani Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand. This activity was attended by 30 universities (PT) from Indonesia, 37 PTs from the Philippines, 10 PTs from Thailand, and 1 PT from Vietnam. Each participating PT explored the possibility of partnership and agreed on a Form of Cooperation (FoC) to partner in the 2023 SEA Teacher Student Exchange program and other programs such as visiting lecturers, collaborative research, and others according to the agreement between PT. “At the end of the activity, on March 22 2023, participants had the opportunity to conduct a study visit to Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage (VRU) especially to the Faculty of Education and a laboratory school called Demonstration School at the early childhood education level. Participants saw first hand how learning is carried out intensively. One teacher guides 3-4 students so that each student gets full attention for their growth and development in learning,” said Jumariati explaining the agenda for this activity.

The SEA Teacher Student Exchange Program itself is a program that aims to provide opportunities for prospective teacher students from various universities in the Southeast Asian region to experience teaching practice directly in schools that have been appointed by partner universities. This program is under the South East Asia Minister of Education (SEAMEO)  which one of its goals is to improve the quality of education in Southeast Asia through the revitalization of teacher education as a priority in building and strengthening the capacity of teachers in the region.

This exchange program is prioritized for students who are in their third year and come from the study programs Mathematics, Science, English, Social Sciences, Economics Education, Physical Education, Elementary Education, and Early Childhood Education. For students who take part in this activity, specific requirements are set, such as being able to communicate in active English, having learned or are currently learning about basic teaching skills, having a commitment to follow this program to completion and having good adaptability. Students who pass the selection will have activities for one month at partner universities based on a cost sharing mechanism per week to make observations, teaching assistance, teaching practice, and reflection. The PT, which is the host, prepares training schools, mentors to guide and monitor students during practicum activities including accommodation and ground transportation within the region.

FKIP ULM has participated in the SEA Teacher Student Exchange Program since 2016, since the beginning of this program. The pandemic that occurred in 2020 has changed the form of SEA Teacher Student Exchange Program activities to online learning. In 2023 this activity will resume offline, but with a new format, so the MoU between the collaborating PTs needs to be renewed. The SEA Teacher Student Exchange Summit, which is being held by the SEAMEO secretariat in 2023 in Bangkok, Thailand, is intended to discuss a new format of implementation that is different from previous years. .

ULM’s participation in this activity resulted in collaboration with 5 universities in Southeast Asia, namely the University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC), Philippines; Valaya Alongkorn Rajabhat University under the Royal Patronage (VRU), Thailand; Philippine Normal University (PNU), Philippines; Adamson University (AdU), Philippines, and Iloilo State University of Fisheries, Science, and Technology (ISUFST), Philippines. “Two of these five PTs have formed a partnership with ULM in the previous SEA Teacher Student Exchange activities, namely UIC and VRU, while PNU, AdU, and ISUFIST are PTs that have just established a partnership in 2023. The realization of this collaboration will be carried out from August to with December 2023, mainly in the form of student exchanges who will carry out teaching practices at training schools. It was agreed that FKIP ULM would send 10 students abroad and vice versa would accept 10 foreign students who would carry out activities in various study programs in FKIP ULM,” explained Atiek.
