Banjarmasin – The Department of Social Sciences Education (JPIPS) at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) once again held a “Practitioners in the Classroom” event as part of the Social Sciences Instructional Design course. The event was held in the auditorium of SMP Negeri 1 Banjarbaru on Tuesday, April 14. It was attended by 2024 JPIPS FKIP ULM students who are taking the course as part of their practice-based pedagogical competency development.

The event was opened by the Chair of JPIPS, Mutiani. In her opening remarks, she emphasized the importance of students being prepared to enter the professional world as educators. She explained that bachelor’s degree graduates cannot immediately become teachers without completing the subsequent phase of Teacher Professional Education (PPG). “Given the current reality of the education sector, bachelor’s degree (S-1) graduates cannot immediately begin working as teachers in schools. There is an additional step that must be taken, namely participating in Teacher Professional Education (PPG) as a requirement for professionalism and legal authorization to teach. This underscores the importance of PPG in developing a teacher’s pedagogical, professional, social, and personal competencies,” she said.

This teaching practice is driven by the need to enrich students’ learning experiences through the integration of theory and real-world practice. In the Social Studies Instructional Design course, students are not only expected to understand concepts but also to be able to develop instructional plans that are effective, adaptable, and tailored to the needs of their students.

Andinna Mega Siwi, an education practitioner, served as a guest speaker. She shared her practical experience in developing lesson plans. During this session, students gained insights into practical techniques and strategies for designing instruction, ranging from the development of instructional materials to adapting them to the characteristics of students in the classroom. In addition, the guest speaker also discussed various challenges often faced in developing lesson plans, allowing students to understand the real-world conditions of the education sector. The interactive discussion that took place during the event demonstrated the students’ enthusiasm for gaining knowledge and firsthand experience from a practitioner.

Through this activity, students are expected to bridge the gap between the theory learned in the classroom and its implementation in the field, thereby gaining practical skills in designing meaningful learning experiences. This teaching practicum is a strategic initiative aimed at preparing future educators who are professional, innovative, and responsive to the current dynamics of education. (Admin)
