Banjarmasin – The Department of Social Sciences Education (JPIPS) at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) held a public lecture on the theme “Rivers as the Identity and Tourist Attraction of Banjarmasin City” on Saturday, June 6, at the Kayuh Baimbai Hall in the Banjarmasin City Government Building. This event was held as an extension of the Tourism course taken by JPIPS FKIP ULM students.
The event was opened by Mutiani, Chair of JPIPS FKIP ULM, and attended by faculty members, staff, and students from the 2023 and 2025 cohorts of JPIPS FKIP ULM. This public lecture featured a guest speaker, Ananda, the Deputy Mayor of Banjarmasin. His presence provided students with the opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the connection between rivers, urban identity, and the tourism sector. The material presented also served as a supplement to the knowledge students had already acquired through their Tourism course.
Through the chosen theme, this event serves as a platform for students to broaden their understanding of the role of rivers in the lives of the people of Banjarmasin. In addition to being recognized as part of the region’s identity, rivers also hold potential that can be developed as a tourist attraction to support the city’s growth. The organization of this public lecture is one of the efforts by JPIPS FKIP ULM to provide a learning experience that not only focuses on classroom theory but also connects students with practitioners and policymakers who have direct experience and involvement in regional development.
Through this activity, according to Mutiani, students are expected to understand the importance of the river as part of Banjarmasin’s identity while also recognizing its potential as a tourist attraction. In addition, this public lecture is expected to broaden students’ knowledge regarding regional tourism development and strengthen the connection between course material and real-world conditions in the community.
