The Community Service Team for the Mandatory Faculty Community Service Program (PDWA) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM)—from the Department of Biology Education, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP)—in collaboration with Insan Madani Islamic High School in Banjarmasin held a training session titled “Training for Students at Islamic High School Insan Madani in Banjarmasin to Preserve the Environment by Strengthening Their Role in Environmental Management.” The event was held at Islamic High School Insan Madani on Friday, June 12, starting at 8:30 a.m. WITA.
The event, aimed at instilling an understanding among students regarding wetland management—particularly in the mitigation of organic and inorganic waste—was opened by Dharmono, Associate Dean for General Affairs, Finance, and Human Resources at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of ULM and Chair of the PDWA Team. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of environmental education for the younger generation. “Young people—in this case, students—are not merely recipients of education but are the agents who will build a strategic pillar: the driving force of ecology. By organizing collective movements to preserve the environment, young people can take the initiative in utilizing and managing waste in their surroundings. In this regard, environmental education needs to be instilled from an early age so that students not only understand the theory but are also able to develop real habits in maintaining cleanliness and preserving the environment,” he said.
The principal of Insan Madani Islamic High School, Heri Siswanto, also expressed his appreciation for the event. He hopes this training will equip students to adopt environmentally friendly behaviors in their daily lives, both at school and at home.
As a show of support for environmental conservation programs, the event continued with the presentation of certificates, plaques, symbolic plants, trash bins, composters, as well as EM4 and molasses. The presentation was conducted jointly by the PDWA Team Leader, the Foundation Chair, the School Principal, teachers, and students. Participants then took a pre-test to assess their initial understanding before receiving the main material on waste management, environmental conservation, and disaster mitigation management in wetland environments, presented by the PDWA Team from the Department of Biology Education at ULM.
During the main session, the presenters explained that waste management and environmental conservation need to become part of daily life, especially for students living in wetland areas. One of the presenters stated, “Waste management in wetland areas requires special attention because environmental conditions significantly affect decomposition, sanitation, and disaster risks. Therefore, students need to be equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills.” The event also featured the screening of educational videos, a question-and-answer session, and a post-test to assess participants’ understanding after the session. The students’ enthusiasm was high throughout the event, as it consisted of a variety of comprehensive activities, including hands-on workshops on waste sorting and composting led by faculty members from the Department of Biology Education at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), ULM. The event then continued with fun activities that boosted the participants’ spirits and fostered a sense of camaraderie. Through this training, SMA Islam Insan Madani Banjarmasin hopes that students will become a generation that is more environmentally conscious, possesses basic skills in waste management, and plays an active role in disaster mitigation, particularly in wetland areas.
