Banjarmasin-Davao, Philippines – On Tuesday, November 4, lecturers and students from the Sociology Education Department of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) carried out a Community Service (PkM) activity with their partner, the Indonesian School in Davao (SID), in the Philippines. The activity was held online via the Zoom Meeting platform starting at 3:30 p.m. WITA. A total of 15 participants attended, including teachers from the Indonesian School in Davao. The activity was opened by the head of the Sociology Education Department, Rochgiyanti, and moderated by the Department Secretary, Cucu Widaty.

This community service program aims to strengthen academic collaboration and improve teacher capacity in the field of multicultural literacy and introduction to local Indonesian culture. The activities were carried out by two community service teams with different themes and approaches that complemented each other.

The first team took up the theme “Strengthening Multicultural Literacy and Pedagogical Innovation,” chaired by Sumiati, with members Cucu Widaty, Alfisyah, Sigit Ruswinarsih, Rahmat Nur, Reski, and Muhammad Adhitya HP. This team focused on efforts to broaden teachers’ understanding of multicultural literacy and the application of pedagogical innovation in the learning process in Indonesian schools abroad. Through interactive materials and discussions, this team seeks to raise awareness of the importance of cultural diversity in the context of inclusive education.

Meanwhile, the second PkM team, entitled “Introduction to the River Culture of the Banjar People in South Kalimantan,” was chaired by Rochgiyanti with members Lumban Arofah, Yuli Apriati, Nasrullah, Syahlan Mattiro, and Laila Azkia. This activity introduces the rich river culture of the Banjar community as a form of local wisdom that illustrates the harmonious relationship between humans and their natural environment. Through visual presentations and narrative explanations, participants are invited to understand the various socio-economic activities and cultural traditions of the Banjar community centered around the river, such as floating markets and traditional rituals.

One of the participants, Dede Kurniawan Nugraha, expressed his appreciation for the event. According to him, this kind of community service activity is very relevant to the school’s need to strengthen diversity awareness and multicultural-based learning. “Multicultural awareness is still a challenge for schools in introducing Indonesian culture to students. Through this activity, we gained a new perspective on integrating cultural values into the teaching and learning process,” he said. He also added that the students showed great enthusiasm for the Banjar community activities that are often carried out on the river, as this provided a real picture of Indonesian society, which is rich in social and cultural values.

This activity demonstrates the commitment of the Sociology Education Department of FKIP ULM in implementing the three pillars of higher education, particularly in the aspect of community service. In addition to strengthening cross-border cooperation between FKIP ULM and Sekolah Indonesia Davao, this activity also serves as a means to sow the values of multiculturalism and introduce Indonesian local wisdom in the realm of global education.
